Brooklyn Vegan published this list (before some minor revisions) without the descriptions. I also sent it to omgvinyl, but I missed their deadline. So, here is my year-end best of 2011 list. Enjoy!

2011 Records

1. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues (Sub Pop)

I generally don't get much time to check out new music, and I generally don't give the time of day to most popular music. I just hate wading through the garbage to find gems like Fleet Foxes. Thankfully my friend Dale subjects me to great new music outside the DIY metal realm I'm generally immersed in. Helplessness Blues is such a painfully beautiful record, I don't know how they even write these songs. After falling in love with this album I sort of wish I would've paid a bit more attention during the vocalist's solo performance opening for Joanna Newsom.

2. Ash Borer - Ash Borer (Psychic Violence/Pesanta Urfolk)

It's not often a band evolves so much in between releases, but Ash Borer definitely pulled it off. I love the songwriting here, so memorable. I almost feel like they're taking a path similar to Krallice… not in genre or style, but in aesthetic. Beginning in black metal but breaking out of that mold and changing into something very unique.

3. Loss - Despond (Profound Lore)

My pal Chad turned me on to LOSS a few years ago during my last casual trip to Minneapolis. When Despond came out this year I took notice, but didn't have the time to pick it up. Unfortunately that meant it fell off my radar until September or October. Man, I screwed up. LOSS have unleashed one of the best doom metal records I've ever heard. And that track with the vocalist from Pallbearer? Damn… great stuff.

4. Young Widows - In And Out Of Youth And Lightness (Temporary Residence)

Young Widows are a band I've always enjoyed, and more so with each record. I feel like they evolve in the same direction and at the same pace as my own musical interests. I heard mixed things on In And Out Of Youth… and hesitated to check out it. Finally my friend Brian forced me to listen to some songs on YouTube, and I'm very grateful for that. Even though these songs are subdued and relaxed compared to their prior material, Young Widows have managed to evolve into a fantastic mellow band. There's a lot of great atmosphere on this record.

5. Algernon Cadwallader - Parrot Flies (Hot Green Records)

Yup, it's guitar laden indie rock with off-key vocals… and it's absolutely fantastic. My pal Seth and I went to see Algernon in Chicago this past summer, it was the most disgusting show I had ever been to, and I think I was the oldest guy there. Weird. But the show was a ton of fun and it's always great to get to Chicago. Seth also calls this one of his favorite records ever… it's definitely worth it if you're into weird indie rock that blossoms from the DIY/punk community.

6. Hell - II (Pesanta Urfolk)

Gritty, dark doom from Salem, OR. What is in the water over there? So many awesome bands. HELL does the best job of capturing the feel and emotion of Buried At Sea while remaining unique and crafting songs that are themselves memorable. Not at all another modern doom clone. The 2LP is expertly presented by Pesanta, as well.

7. Hammers Of Misfortune - 17th Street (Metal Blade)

I would never have anticipated a Metal Blade release ever crack my top 10… or my CD collection in general. Surprise! I have no beef with the label, they just generally don't release records that interest me. Well, I blind bought 17th Street without any prior listening. Sometimes I get burned, this time I got stoked. It's not the type of band I'm usually a fan of, but the songwriting rules and the vocals hit a very, very fine target. It's easy to do this style in a very cheesy way, and that turns me off. Hammers pull it off, though. Superior riffage.

8. Panopticon - Social Disservices (Flenser Records)

There's a lot to love here if you're into black metal. There's also a lot to love here if you're into extreme metal with lyrics and concepts that break the mold a bit. The entire album is based around the sole member's experiences in social work and social services fields. There's a great essay included with the record, and that's something that really drove home the appeal of this album for me. Great songwriting, to boot!

9. Battles - Glass Drop (Warp)

I've been in love with Battles since the B and C EPs came out years ago. Mirrored was a good record, but the vocals drove me nuts sometimes. I think I was the only person that was excited to hear Tyondai Braxton had left the band… but I was also somewhat concerned about what would happen to some of the band's depth. Crisis averted! The guest vocalists here really add a great deal to the record, and the songwriting is so incredibly focused. Battles continue to boggle my mind, and Glass Drop took a potentially terrible turn of events and capitalized on it with immense skill.

10. Ascension - Consolamentum (World Terror Committee)

People are overlooking this record, and it's driving me nuts. It came out at the end of 2010, so officially it's not a 2011 release. But every list-compiling maniac had their year-end records selected before it was released… so to me that means it's eligible this year. German black metal, reminds me at times of Deathspell Omega, Glorior Belli and the like, but Ascension have a very unique feel. The production is spot on and the songs vary in tempo so you're never bored by a series of continually blazing fast tracks. To top it off the artwork is fantastic on this record. I actually blind-purchased this based on the art alone. The fact that this record is overlooked is seriously criminal.

LITERATURE!

For the past couple weeks I've been considering picking up as many used Philip K Dick and Dark Tower books as I could find so I can sell them at the Gilead Media Music Festival. A Scanner Darkly would always sell PKD books at their merch table and to steal a page from their book (hardy har) I figured it made sense to sell used Dark Tower books on the cheap at the Gilead table. There's going to be a bunch of other merch, posters, shirts, records, etc alongside the books, too!

In 2011 HELL released their II 2LP with Pesanta Urfolk (Eternal Warfare handled a killer CS release, too!) and it easily landed amongst my own top 10 for 2011. Incredible scathing sludge/doom, and they hardly play shows. I've somehow managed to convince them to make their way out to Wisconsin in April for the Gilead Media Music Festival!

MUSIC FESTIVAL VENUE = BOOKED!

Had a meeting today with Ryan at the Electric Lounge & Lanes in Oshkosh, WI. I'm happy to announce that they will provide the venue for the Gilead Media Music Festival!

The Electric Lounge is a historic building located a quarter mile east of downtown Oshkosh located at 405 Washington St in Oshkosh, WI that serves as a venue for many local events and private parties. The room we have booked for the festival will fit about 300 people. This venue may also require that the show be 21+, which I don't think should be a huge deal. I figure most people attending are over the age of 21. This may change, and we may be able to do an all ages event, but for now I'm billing the fest as 21+.

Here's a photo of my pal Scott standing in the room we'll be using. I took this photo from the small stage on the east side of the room. I'm quite excited we were able to find such an intimate environment that will work so well for the show.

GILEAD MEDIA MUSIC FESTIVAL.
Saturday April 28th and Sunday April 29th.

The venue I'm hoping to use is the Time Community Theater. Set right in downtown Oshkosh, on the same block as records, coffee, food, comics, and midwestern small-town hospitality. I'm working with the non-profit group that manages the theater to get the details figured and find a way to make this event work at their venue. More info coming soon, including line-up and other fun info.

For six years I've been delivering you records from my home in the middle of Wisconsin. In 2012 you will follow that path back here and together we will share our love for these bands.

THE DIFFERENCE A COUPLE DAYS WILL MAKE...

Wow. Unsure of exactly where to begin with this blog update. I don't know, expect some disjointed ramblings...

On Sunday evening I posted a blog entry about some money I lost out on that really put a huge bump in the road for the label. I just wanted to put something out there to say, "hey, things have gotten kind of rough, I'm stressed and not real sure what to do to get back on track, buy some stuff if you can." What I received was an absurd outpouring of support.

I just want to take a moment and say that it wasn't my intention to try and get a ton of attention and to guilt everyone into buying some of my records. It wasn't some cry for people to give me all their money. Yeah, of course I was hoping some additional sales would help out. I more so wanted to be honest about the state of the label, since I know people are really into what I'm doing. I didn't want to just let it idly fall into a state of vague inactivity while I spent months trying to recover. I've always been very transparent about what's going on and how the label operates.

I heard from friends, fellow labels, distributors, customers, and even some press outlets/writers, all in response to my little write up. This entire blast of support and orders has been totally overwhelming and unexpected. The word "blast" is sort of a weird one to use, but that's really the only word I can find to accurately describe how I feel. It took me by total surprise.

Thank you. I am usually accused of being long-winded and wordy by my pal John, but those are really the only words I can come up with in this case.

If you emailed me, placed an order, wrote a forum post, published an article, "liked" or re-tweeted a link, anything of that sort... I thank you endlessly. The fact that so many people have such a positive opinion of the label is something I always hoped for, but I never expected it to be like this. The people who support independent labels and particularly, it would seem, metal labels, are amongst the most supportive people I've ever known.

The process required to get the label back on track is definitely underway, thanks to the last two days of support. I will continue to post updates as we move forward on the Mutilation Rites 12" and Thou collection 2CD/2LP. Thank you, for everything.

THE STATUS & FUTURE OF GILEAD MEDIA

2011 has been a year of immense growth for the label. I made the decision in 2010 that I would focus solely on metal releases, and that was a choice I’ve become very happy with. I’ve released a large quantity of records this year, especially for being a one-guy operation with some-time help from friends. I handle almost every aspect of a release, organizing the mixing and mastering of the audio, rendering and laying-out art files for packaging and inserts, screen printing all patches and posters that come with releases, and making all buttons. It’s a huge task for just one release, let alone the batch I’ve done this year. As of November 19, 2011, that total is seven new releases and six represses - all of which were vinyl.

It’s been a crazy year, and it’s been rough. While doing all of this I’ve also been managing a screen-printing shop, Offbeat Press, and working on producing a film I co-wrote and co-directed, Dead Weight. 2011 has been a year of very little rest, a lot of coffee, and a lot of stress. On the opposite side of things, this has been the most productive and fulfilling year of my life.

On the label side of things, I owe that success to all the people that have ordered records and to all the folks that run websites, blogs, magazines etc. that have covered or promoted my releases. I’ve met tons of incredible people and built some great relationships over the course of the year. The level of support I’ve had is overwhelming. It started to feel like the label was unstoppable.

That’s what made things so hard when I found out I won’t be seeing much, if any, of the $5,500 I was owed by my old retail distributor, the Independent Label Collective. It was like running full speed into a brick wall.

Earlier in 2011 there was a situation of inner turmoil at ILC, which involved people I considered friends, many of whom I’d known for quite some time and to whom I had grown close. Having helped found the company from the ashes of the Lumberjack Mordam Music Group, I took everything very personally and was thoroughly irritated with the situation. People say business isn’t personal, whatever, that’s ridiculous. Everything is personal. For me it is. I’m not a business guy, so when I build a relationship with people on a business level, it means a lot to me personally and I take it very seriously.

So, in light of the drama and turmoil at the company, I pulled Gilead Media from their distribution network. Three months later the company imploded, having fired their three key employees that were integral to department management and operations. The owner is now MIA, the company is a mess, there are serious pending issues, there are no assets, and essentially no way for me to get the money I’m owed. Remember that killer month earlier this year when I released the Fell Voices LP, Ash Borer/Fell Voices LP, Northless 2LP, and took over the Thou Peasant stock from Autopsy Kitchen records? Yeah, that was the period I’m owed sales for, first quarter 2011, great timing.

Some of the other ILC labels took over the company’s operations to try and bring in as much money as they could from open invoices to pay off the labels. It’s going to be an uphill battle to collect on invoices and whatever they can mange to collect is going to be spread thinly across the many labels owed money.

There are definitely a lot of labels that are owed much more than Gilead Media, so I’m not trying to throw a pity party for myself and claim that I’m in a dire position all alone, the sole victim. Every ILC label got hit hard and they all need support from their respective groups of fans. What I am telling you is this: Gilead Media is a label that operates with minimal overhead, but also operates with minimal profit and reinvests 100% of the meager profits back into the label to release more records. I do everything I can to ensure that each release is of the highest quality, and that costs money. I press all of my records in the US, and I purposely avoid using the cheap and easy routes. I use manufacturers and printers that I trust, that I know create high quality products. I use manufacturers that will provide the best customer service to me, and therefore ensure the best results for my customers and supporters. I keep prices as low as possible so people can afford the records and ultimately feel as though they are getting the best value for their money. I’ve never taken a paycheck from Gilead Media.

Right now I also owe the pressing plant and printer a fairly large collective sum for the pressing of recent releases. My plant was gracious enough to pump out these represses for me, despite my situation, so that I have more to offer to get money coming in. But right now I can’t send anything else to the plant until I’m settled up with them, until everything is paid off. They’re willing to be patient, and they know I’ll pay them as money is available, but I’d like to ensure that happens sooner rather than later.

So, that being said, $5,500 is a lot for me, especially in a year when I’ve been trying to avoid using my credit card for a single release and I’m paying off bills with cash. I don’t want handouts, and I’m not asking for donations from people. All I want to ask is this: if you were thinking of picking up some records, and haven’t, now is a really good time. I always say that every dollar spent with Gilead Media directly supports future releases. Because of this situation I’m in that is more applicable now than ever before. The flow of records coming out of Gilead Media at this point depends solely on continued support from folks who buy records. Many of you have already done so much this year, and I’m very grateful for that. Anything you can do to spread the word and get some other folks to pick up a record or two is going to help out immensely.

I just printed a large batch of new shirts for Ash Borer, Fell Voices, and Thou that are available in the merch section of my online store, in addition to the addition of odds and ends of random older shirts I had lying around. I’ve also added some new distro titles that have been lying around, and put a ton of older Gilead Media releases and older distro titles on mega-sale. I have to clear out these shelves and pay off some bills, so if you can grab some stuff you normally wouldn’t, please do. If you can talk someone into doing the same, please do.

What this financial issue also means is my release schedule had to take a serious hit. I had to cancel a number of records and delay a couple more. For the records I’m still committed to I’m working on a plan to get those releases out in a timely manner. Gilead Media is not closing, not for the foreseeable future. I love doing this, I can’t stop doing it, and I will continue to. But there is going to be a period of down time while I step back, collect things, get back on track financially, and then attempt forge ahead once everything is stable. Another aspect of support that will help things move in the right direction will come from retail stores. If you work at a store and want to carry Gilead Media releases you can now order from Revolver and Cobraside in the US and from Hammer Heart Records in Europe. The upcoming records I will be working on are: Mutilation Rites I Am Legion 180g 12” and Thou Collection 2CD. Anything else beyond that is going to be contingent on many factors, primarily how much of this debt I can pay off. At the present time I can’t commit to anything more.

If you’ve bought a record I released this year, or any year, published kind words about records I’ve released, seen any of the Gilead Media bands on tour and bought a shirt, or even just told some kid on a message board to check out an album I’ve released, I thank you. Your excitement and love for the projects I’m involved in means everything. Things will be back on track soon.

Just a quick note to let everyone know that the mailorder apocalypse is almost over! I'm about a day away from being caught up shipping everything, thank goodness. Note: Don't have two new records and four represses all show up in a two month period. It's not a good idea.

There's been some wacky stuff going on behind the scenes over here that will greatly effect the way the label operates over the next year. I will be posting a blurb about what happened over the course of this week, along with a store-wide sale on the Gilead online store. Not good news, I will say that. Bad news even, perhaps. But I won't be closing the label, just need to scale back for a bit.

DARK MATTER/DUNKLE MATERIE - Terence Hannum & Alexander Binder - Zine & DVD. Released by Land Of Decay. Blurb from the label: DARK MATTER/DUNKLE MATERIE combines the haunting photography of German based artist Alexander Binder in visual collaboration with artist/musician Terence Hannum (of LOCRIAN). In a limited edition of 200, this deluxe black and white publication comes in a printed black envelope and contains a DVDr of one of Hannum's recent videos Epiclesis (10m38s / 2011).

Separated by the centerfold, where the DVD is affixed, this publication is composed of two distinct parts by each artist. On one side Hannum's hazy black and white video stills, dissected from the video on the DVD, are edited for the printed page creating a murky narrative between frozen landscapes and a mysterious ritualistic musical event. On the other side Binder's foggy photographs present a procession of profane images, some lost to their process, and others more explicit in their intensity. Summit is essentially my favorite album. It has so many elements that I love, tuned to perfection. On top of that, it shows on of my favorite bands reaching a new point in their evolution. Originally released on vinyl by Southern Lord, Summit is finally available again on vinyl, repressed by the band themselves. 180 gram clear w/white smoke vinyl with heavy-duty tip-on jacket (including beautiful gloss spot print), printed inner sleeve on thick 14pt stock (w/updated and corrected text), pressed from new plates w/matrix etchings, and no sticker on the jacket! Huzzah!

This great southern state is known for having a rich culture, and in terms of music culture it's most often known for the southern riffage or sludging doom. Here's some really exciting Friday morning news for you. Gilead Media will be co-releasing (alongside the lovely Howling Mine) the insanely intense debut album by Minneapolis black metal folks, FALSE. You will not be ready for this 12", I assure you. Mixed and mastered by THE master, Adam Tucker from Signaturetone Recording. The new mix sounds unbelievable.

I first heard about this band while sitting around a coffee house in Madison, WI with Bryan and Andy from Thou and all the dudes from the Body. Thou had just played Minneapolis the night prior with FALSE and everyone in Thou was entirely and complete blown away by how intense and relentless FALSE were live. Just going by their description and by how strongly they felt about the band, I knew I had to hear them IMMEDIATELY. I told Bryan that he needed to pass along any recordings he could get his hands on. A couple months later I get an email informing me that my long-time friend Adam Tucker is in the midst of mixing & mastering the recording for release. I really couldn't have been happier at this point. Tucker only puts a million % into everything he's a part of, and that's the truth. I'm sitting here listening to his mix as I write this, and I cannot wait to unleash this record upon the world with the band and Howling Mine records. It's going to be something very special. My mind keeps going back to that coffee shop on State St in Madison, and how Andy and Bryan just kept calling the band "the most relentless black metal they've ever seen." Put that on a 12" and you're getting somewhere close to what this record will be.

For Thou's March 2011 midwest tour Gilead Media printed about 95 two color 19"x10" posters. There's a few left, so we're going to give people worldwide the opportunity to order them now! These are printed on recycled 100lb cover stock from French Paper, using acrylic, non-toxic speedball inks. As a matter of fact, I printed all of these myself (with the assistance of my brother to organize them for drying. FELL VOICES LP ASSEMBLY - PHOTOS + VIDEO

There were a great deal of components for the Fell Voices Untitled LP I released alongside Howling Mine this March. I documented the creation of a few of these components. Here some of them are with a bunch of words as accompaniment.

All the goods have arrived! (Except for the posters at the point this photo was taken, pictured separately below).

The band came up with a great image for the patch. I had a few issues getting some of the fine detail to burn the way I wanted it to, but ultimately the patches turned out really nice.

I had printed all of the inserts included with the LP. We had some scrap paper around the shop that was the perfect size, very excited to save some money there. Here is the board we use for larger format paper printing:

We actually assembled these the morning of the day I drove to Milwaukee to then assemble the NORTHLESS 2LPs with the band and Halo of Flies. So much assembly! For these Fell Voices LPs, though, Dale brought the movie, I jammed the espresso, we kicked em out. A fun morning with a great friend and a great batch of records:

ADAM'S YEAR END LIST MANIA

Herman wins rabbit of the year for maintaining a great attitude about life despite going entirely blind in 2010. You're a champion, buddy!

A few websites got in touch with me to create a year end best of list. I like making these lists, but I always like going beyond just a "top 10 best records" type format. Here is an expanded version of my list, with lots of words and probably a big batch of typos!

Top 10 of 2010 released prior to 2010 - AKA Old albums I never heard before and fell in love with this year.
- Andrew Jackson Jihad - Can't Maintain - I had always brushed this off as another folk punk sort of record, when in reality I had never heard it. And although it does have elements of both punk and folk, it surpasses all of the stigmas around that entire genre.
- The Specials - The Specials - I never liked punk growing up, I never liked ska. But working with a dude who refuses to let ska die has changed me, and opened me up to this legendary band that I had never heard before, only heard of.
- Kid Dynamite - Kid Dynamite - Another case of avoiding all things punk growing up. There's not much to say that hasn't been said about Kid Dynamite. Brilliant stuff.
- Mogwai - The Hawk Is Howling - I grew fairly burnt out on Mogwai after "Happy Songs" and sort of officially stopped giving a shit. Turns out that was a foolish decision. This record rules.
- 7 Seconds - Live - More punk-o-phobia. Never knew these dudes were basically a melodic posi hardcore band. I had always taken them for some sort of crusts based on the absurd number of buttflap patches with their logo on it that I saw throughout high school.
- Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs - I first heard these guys while on the road with Thou, just a song or two that guitarist Andy Gibbs had been playing in the van. It caught my attention due to their sounding similar to Alcest (and then he went on to tell me they share a member). I finally got my hands on the album in 2010 and was eternally bummed out over how much I've been missing. This and Alcest turned me onto all the great music coming out of France recently.
- Altar Of Plagues - White Tomb - Not quite sure how this slipped by me, as it should've been something I checked out upon its initial release. Sucks for me.
- Isis - Wavering Radiant - ISIS was one of my favorite bands for many years, no doubt about it. But over time, I guess right around when "In The Absence of Truth" came out, I lost interest fast. I know a lot of people rag on this item, but it's now one of my favorite ISIS records.
- Peste Noire - Ballade Cuntre Lo Anemi Francor - A perfect example of great music coming out of France. I picked this up when I was on an epic journey for the Amoseurs (believe they also share a member with Alcest) album and was, at first, eternally bummed out. Anyone who's heard both bands will understand the stark contrast in style, and why I was taken completely off guard. After a couple months collecting dust on my shelf I revisited this album in a new light and fell in love.
- Crippled Black Phoenix - 200 Tons Of Bad Luck - I had always been somewhat mediocre on this band. A friend turned me onto this album and I couldn't have been more pleased with the discovery.

Best Records of 2010 - AKA The best new albums I heard
- Daughters - Daughters - I was a huge fan of As The Sun Sets, but when Daughters first came on the scene I was less than thrilled, despite the similarity to later ATSS material. There just seemed to be something missing. When "Hell Songs" came out I got way into the band, and I feel like this record took things to a whole new level for the band and for intense, spazzy metallic… stuff. I know half the band hated this record and quit, but I think it's outstanding.
- Call Me Lightning - When I Am Gone My Blood Will Be Free - You know, I'm not quite sure what it is about this band that they've yet to become huge, but I've loved every record they've released. Although this album differs from their previous material, becoming more focused and anthemic, I feel like it's their best. The songs are at once stuck in your head. Unbelievably catchy and energetic. In addition to this, their performance at the Get Rad LP release show this year blew me away.
- Black Mountain - Wilderness Heart - I had heard earlier records by this band and been less than thrilled, especially considering the immense hype I had always heard. Rob at Ramalama in Toledo, OH convinced me to pick this up during my two year wedding anniversary road-trip on Halloween weekend. I was convinced when he explained the band had brought in an outside party to handle production instead of doing it themselves. It shows, and it was a great choice.
- Agalloch - Marrow Of The Spirit - What do I even need to say, this is on, like… everyone's lists.
- Protestant - Judgements - I don't know what's wrong with people into hardcore right now. Protestant should probably be one of the biggest bands in the entire "really, really, REALLY pissed off" sort of hardcore genre. Cory describes this record as the band throwing down the gauntlet. That about sums it up. Wisconsin, I love your music.
- Man's Gin - Smiling Dogs - I didn't know anything about this guy, I never heard his band, Cobalt, and I didn't really know what to expect. But Profound Lore released it, it was getting good press and I wanted to beef up my order from the label. I gotta say, I was thrown for a loop at first, but after just a couple listens I was head over heels. This is now one of my favorite work albums. I definitely feel like this guy is channeling some Layne Staley sometimes. Side note: Another band I probably could've put on the list of records I got into for the first time this year: Alice In Chains "Unplugged". Thanks to Matthew Thudium for showing me the light on that one.
- Ludicra - The Tenant - Here's an album I REALLY wanted to release on vinyl, but due to budgetary stuff I just could NOT justify. Great band that follows through with another outstanding record. Love the diversity in these guys.
- Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me - If any one person on Earth is close to looking like a little wood-elf, it's Joanna Newsom. I love all of her records for different reasons (despite being unbelievably irritated with her initially while working with my friend Zach at a record store years ago), and this is no exception. It has a different feel, but I love how she really uses her true(er) voice now. Beautiful songwriting.
- Deftones - Diamond Eyes - Yea, I went there. These guys were, hands down, my #1 band growing up in small town Wisconsin. The last couple albums bummed me out and were more or less entirely forgettable. But this record… shit. A real true return to form, but with an updated and evolved sound. Thanks guys, just thank you.
- Fell Voices/Ash Borer Split - So what if I'm releasing this on LP, it's not out yet and the cassette version came out in 2010! Some great, looong black metal songs from west coast dudes. Both are young bands showing a ton of promise. Can't wait to see where they both go from here.

Bummers of 2010 - AKA Not records I disliked, just didn't hit it for me like I had hoped.
-Torche - Songs For Singles - I've been telling people for the past couple years that if I hadn't seen Torche at Dude Fest 2008, then Gilead Media probably wouldn't be a label anymore. This is a silly exaggeration, but that show came along at a beautiful time. I was burnt out on running the label, and sick of music in general. Over-worked and financially stressed. I had always been in love with the band, in fact I worked for a music distributor that solicited their self-titled album when it was first released. I don't think a day went by that year where one of us weren't jamming it in the office. I just expected more. There are great songs on here, no doubt about it. And great PARTS. But it just didn't deliver the way I wanted it to.
The Books - The Way Out - Come on dudes, were you phoning this one in? You were so damn good, you were my favorite winter-walk band when I lived in Toledo. You can do better.
- Sufjan Stevens - The Age Of Adz - lolwut?
- The Octopus Project - Hexadecagon - Another case of phoning it in, I feel. I understand they may have been trying to go for more of a subdued and stripped down sound, as opposed to the thick and layered feel of past albums, but it just left me feeling unfulfilled. The one time I saw these guys play was in a club, poorly promoted, so hardly anyone was there. Unbelievable show. I want that, on a record… again.
- Dosh - Tommy - Maybe my taste is just changing, I definitely don't like as much of this style of music anymore. Although I'm not sure how to explain that style. It's not a bad record by any means, I was just stoked to hear it, and then didn't really care much for it afterwards.
- Brian Eno - Small Craft On A Milk Sea - I'll admit, the only Eno stuff I have is Ambient 1 and Another Day on Earth, so I'm by no means a professional. But when you're considered to be one of the legends of ambient music I feel like you should deliver something with a little more of an impact. I don't know what that entails. If I did then I'd write the record myself.
- Black Keys - Brothers - It's the Black Keys, they're still here and they're still bluesy.
- Salome - Terminal - I don't know. I like the split with Thou quite a bit, but this album just didn't hit it for me. I can't pinpoint it, I just can't get behind the songs.
- Grinderman - 2 - Oh shit, here we go. Get ready to hate on me. I just feel like this record is contrived and silly at times. I like the songs, musically, and I know Nick Cave's thing is to do this sort of stuff. But my favorite album of his, that I've heard so far, is No More Shall We Part. So you can probably understand why all the hype around Grinderman doesn't apply to me so much.
- Iron & Wine - Walking Far From Home EP - I puked in my car on the way home from buying this. Get real. Then I realized it was on a major label and I puked again, although understood the reason for the first puke.

Best Vegan Dining Experiences 2010 - AKA I seriously love eating...
- Palomino - Milwaukee, WI - Toffalo wings. Get into them. If you ever wanted greasy bar food to be veganized then Palomino is the answer to your prayers. Such a great menu, and you get a ton of food. The only difference here is that the bar food is actually REALLY GOOD. Loved this place for years. I will seriously drive 90 miles to Milwaukee on a Friday night with my wife just to eat there.
- Honeypie - Milwaukee, WI - On the rare occasion that I'm toffalo winged out, then this is usually the next stop. They have Rishi tea, which is great, and despite the fact that their vegan menu isn't huge they make up for that with their supply of huge vegan cupcakes.
- Pick Me Up - Chicago, IL - When I was young and would drive to Chicago frequently to hang out with folks & go to shows I was turned onto this cute little place on Clark. I always loved the atmosphere and I was just a vegetarian when I ate there originally. I hadn't been back in a long time, up until this past Halloween weekend, when a closed Chicago Diner forced my hand. But holy shit am I glad that happened. I don't know if I just didn't pay attention before, but it seems like their vegan menu has options have been increased, and they use Chicago Soy Dairy vegan cheese on a few of the dishes, which is a great substitute. Next time you're at the metro, or just in that area, definitely stop by. Great value, great food, great atmosphere and the espresso wasn't bad at all. Oh yea, awesome vegan desserts!
- Chicago Diner - Chicago, IL - These guys. Here's my spiel… I love this place because I can walk in and order whatever the hell I want. The entrees are a good size and everything tastes really good. But it is expensive. I can eat $40 in food here ALONE. I don't know if I'll be going back much since I re-discovered my passionate love for Pick Me Up… but it's a great place that has been dedicated to being a meat-free establishment since 1983. Gotta love that.
- Seva - Ann Arbor, MI - The entire time I lived in Toledo I made frequent trips to Ann Arbor for record shopping. If you've never been there then be sure to check out Wazoo, Encore and Underground Sounds. All great shops, all within a mile or so of each other. Anyway, I always neglected a dining at Seva despite great recommendations from friends and co-workers. Well my two-year anniversary road trip led to another great food experience (on top of Pick Me Up, and the upcoming Vine and Bean). Extensive vegan options, generous portions and a fun atmosphere. Dear Ann Arbor, I love you and I want to move to you. The first of two restaurants on this list suggested by the lovely Dawn Marshman.
- Vine & Bean - Cleveland, OH - While on said anniversary road trip we swung out to Cleveland to visit my great friend Dawn and her husband Chaz. Both ex-coworkers of mine from my life in Toledo, and both people I've missed gravely. The morning we planned to leave town Dawn took us to a great little diner in a residential part of Cleveland. I never doubted Dawn's taste in food, she's never led me astray, so I knew we were in for a treat. There's a small menu, but everything we had was fantastic. For me, it's hard to find satisfying vegan food. This place hit the spot, hard.
- Ipanema Cafe - Richmond, VA - The company I used to work for based in Richmond gave me good reason to take a couple trips out to this lovely city, one I quickly fell in love with. Ipanema was the last place I ever ate in Richmond on my last visit there before leaving that job. What a great way to end the trip. Awesome food and good talk with Sean Rhorer and Alex DiMattesa. Vegan dessert helps every dining experience, big time. Ipanema delivered.
- Funck/McWilliams Residence - New Orleans, LA - Bryan and Emily are some of the greatest people I've met over my travels and experiences the past 6 years or so since my life got exciting. To top it off, they love cooking awesome food. Amazing hosts. Also, I ate a LOT of the chocolate chip cookies, I feel bad about that. But they were SO GOOD.
- Ashley Lamers' Vegan Chocolate Cake - My personal friend Ashley makes the best vegan cake I've ever hard, hand's down. She should sell that shit. Now I want some, real bad.
- Anything my wife, Cari, made this year - This was our first full year trying to maintain a vegan lifestyle. Prior to this I did most of the cooking, and a lot of my recipes called for cheese. I was sort of in the dark after that, whereas Cari blossomed into an amazing cook. She really jumped in head first finding delicious recipes and modifying them to our tastes. Eating at home was never so awesome! I have no qualms doing dishes when there is such an awesome meal that once rested on them.

Things with the label have been on the back burner over the past month or so, which probably isn't really a good thing considering how much mailorder there's been and how many releases I'm supposed to be working on.

Last week I spent everyday after work finishing up a feature-length screenplay with my pal John. We wrote until at least midnight every night after working full days, which made for a very long week. But, luckily for us, there was an immense amount of Rishi Tea to drink and fuel our writing. We're working on editing the first draft next week after getting some feedback from friends, but overall we're very happy with how it turned out and we've been receiving generally outstanding feedback. The film is going to be called Dead Weight, and we're shooting in April 2011.

In addition to all that writing, I've also leveled up at screen printing. I'm now the main printer at work, and clocking in a solid forty hours a week, as opposed to being the part-time guy. It's safe to say that I'm fairly excited about this development, as screen printing is one of the few jobs I've held in recent memory that hasn't driven me absolutely insane, the first job I've ever really loved aside from working at a record store. But we all know you can't pay the bills by hucking records at people in a small college town, so it goes. If that was the case then I'd still be working for The Exclusive Company in downtown Oshkosh, WI.

So there's that. In an hour or so I'll be making my way down to a local "urban craft fair" in town called Handmade For The Holidays. My companion, Cari, was accepted as a vendor and will be selling her adorable hand-made catnip toys alongside some other cutesy crafts she has concocted over the past few weeks since her slot was confirmed. It's sure to be a great time, with some great arts and crafts.

Over the coming weeks I'm hoping to focus some more on the label. I really need to finish delivering the components for the Northless layout, send that and the Fell Voices LP master audio off to be cut and plated and start working on promoting the crap out of those albums.

Ahh yes, and the reading. I've been dedicated to setting aside time during my lunch at work each day to read, as I've developed an overwhelming stack of un-read new books. I've decided to crank through Since I seem to have amassed a sizable collection of his novels and short stories. It's been a great ride thus far. I finished UBIK and The Man In The High Castle, and I'm currently in the middle of Lies, INC, which I'm actually not all that into as of yet. Next up on the docket: Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said.

Gilead Media - Email Update for 9/9/2010

I finally got around to watching Yojimbo today. I bought it like, two years ago, and never actually watched it. Enjoyed it immensely. Going to try getting through Sanjuro before sleep.

Things at Gilead Media may have appeared quite slow, and this may be true to some extent. There was some stuff going on in the background, but in general the label took a back seat for a while there. I was placing a big focus on preparing for our vendor table at Wizard World/Chicago Comic Con, and preparing for the intense Annual Oshkosh Zombie Walk, which I co-founded/help coordinate.

The Comic Con vendor table consisted of Heart Felt Well catnip toys and Buttons By Bernie. If you haven't taken a second to check out my wife's super-cute catnip toys, then take a moment to get on that, they're great... and 5% of sales goes to the Oshkosh Area Humane Society! For Buttons By Bernie (the new name under which I conduct all button related business) my friend John and I, through much brainstorming at work, came up with about 100 nerdy/horror/scifi/action film related buttons and designed/pressed them over the course of 3 weeks. There are some pretty great designs in there, and I'm looking forward to setting up an etsy shop for all the pre-made buttons sometime in the near future. All in all it was a very fun weekend. Plus, here's a picture of me with a dude dressed up as Moss from The IT Crowd.

The Annual Oshkosh Zombie Walk was also quite a blast. It starts as an hour long Zombie Walk throughout downtown during the Gallery Walk, and concludes at the Time Community Theater in downtown Oshkosh. The Theater is a non-profit community run theater in need of much renovation and a whole lot of love. During the after-party we have contests, raffles, foodstuffs, drink and trivia events with prizes donated by over 40 sponsors (including Image Comics, Tony Moore, Rue Morgue Magazine and many local businesses). All of the money we raise at this event goes straight to the theater, not a dime in our pockets. We spent about 4 months preparing this year, and ended up with about 500-600 zombies and at least 500 non-zombie spectators that came down just for the event. Not to mention all of the regular art-walk traffic. Overall we were quite pleased with the turnout! If you want to check out some photos, then head over to Facebook and "like" Oshkosh Horror. It's been pretty quiet on the Gilead Media front, or so things would seem.

I've been dealing with a couple messes. One with the garment provider I ordered the blank garments from for the Thou SUMMIT shirts, what a disaster. Finally fulfilling the rest of the orders for shirts tomorrow. The other mess is with the freight company that carried the mewithoutYou 180 gram LP represses to my door from Bill Smith Custom Records. A bunch of vinyl arrived damaged and I had the pleasure of going through all of the boxes and pulling damages. Great fun. Those copies that are not smashed will be for sale someday.

There are SOME positive things going on with Gilead Media. I'll talk details later, but it involves a fantastic prog-rock trio containing members of a previous Gilead Media artist. People are going to be very, very pleased.

A couple other releases will be split releases with other labels, and involve a couple younger up-and-coming US black metal bands that I'm really excited to be working with.

Finally there may be some progress on a CD release by a great melodic sludgey group of guys from the Wisconsin area. We will see how everything shakes out and if the label goes bankrupt before I get a chance to release all these jams!

Anyway, just checking in for anyone who reads this. Stuff is happening, it's just boring for anyone that's not me and will be more exciting to talk about later.

I was determined to do nothing by read Lovecraft on Sunday, and just put off printing the Summit shirts until Monday. But when I awoke Sunday morning I was somehow incredibly motivated. So I scooted down to Offbeat Press, fired up the dryer and went to town printing shirts.

Water-based printing can be tricky, especially when you're doing it manually. I had a few issues off the bat but everything went smoothly thereafter. Just took forever. On the positive side, I was rewarded with delicious vegan nachos my wife made, and washed that down with two tofutti vegan ice cream bars.

INFECTION 2010: THE SECOND ANNUAL OSHKOSH ZOMBIE WALK

Hey dudes, last year I helped put together a Zombie Walk here in Oshkosh, it was a huge success and 100% of the proceeds from the after-party (almost $900) benefitted the local non-profit community theater.

Here's the info, and the first in a series of promotional videos (in case you ever wondered how bald I am, or wanted to hear me do a real shitty Shaun of the Dead quote/british accent)...

THE DEAD WILL WALK THE EARTH...OR AT LEAST OSHKOSH!

We're proud to finally announce the official time and date for the 2010 Oshkosh Zombie Walk! Join us on September 4th, 2010. Here is a little info about what the Zombie Walk is, and why we do it.

INFECTION is an entirely free event that takes place during the Oshkosh Gallery Walk on September 4th. It is a family event, aimed to draw in zombie fanatics of ALL ages, from the young to the old. Immediately following the shuffle throughout Main Street in downtown Oshkosh there is a free, all-ages after-party that takes place at the Time Community Theater. At the after-party attendees may purchase raffle tickets and concessions. 100% of the proceeds from these items directly benefit the theater. In addition, we have a number of great contests and rounds of trivia in which attendees may participate.

2009 marked our first year organizing the walk, and we were met with high attendance, outstanding community support and overall great success. We had at least 220 attendees in their best zombie make up and costumery gather from all over the state, even as far as Chicago, to walk with us. At the gathering afterwards we managed to raise nearly $900 for the Theater. This marked the most successful fundraiser to date.

THOU "SUMMIT" CD - TOUR EDITION...

So, as most fans of the band know by now, Thou are on tour and currently have in tow a tour edition of their upcoming full-length, Summit. These are limited in numbers, 200 copies, and contain a screen printed outer jacket on 100% recycled paper using non-toxic inks, a litho printed inner lyric sheet on onion skin vellum paper. It really is a pretty striking presentation. There's a long convoluted story as to why we did this, why the official version wasn't finished, but I'm sick of thinking about it. So instead you get these photos I took while my brother and I assembled the handmade version.

It all starts with the screen print. I was not looking forward to printing these, but had no real good reason. When I went to line up the 3-up screens I realized why I was dreading it. One of the pieces of film shifted ever-so-slightly when the screens were burned. So basically this meant that 1 of the images would be spot on, another would be just a TAD off, and a third would be more noticeably off. There was a lot of trial and error trying to get it so all three were acceptable, and ultimately I still wasn't super happy with the outcome, but at this point I do think they turned out damn nice.

Despite the fact that I did use registration pegs, I didn't feel good about taking these in to be cut with a hydraulic cutter. Thank goodness for my wife's crafting supplies! We had an arm cutter that got the job done just fine... it just took FOREVER. So I got a head start on busting those out while my brother de-sleeved a ton of old Gilead Media/Forge Again Records samples so we could use the mylar sleeves. Once I had a good chunk of jackets cut, he began assembly.

My back was killing me, but that's what I get for opting to work in front of the TV instead of at the table in the other room where I could listen to records. Failure. But we got it done, and they turned out great. In the end we actually made 250. 200 to sell on the tour, and 50 for the band and I to split between us & give out to friends & business associates. Those copies were still numbered out of 200. I took #19 from the original batch of 200 as my personal copy. Dark Tower junkies will understand. I also took #19 from the mewithoutYou AB LIFE screen printed edition LPs as my own personal copy. A new tradition is born.

So here is the final product. Outer hand set-up and screenprinted jacket, litho printed translucent lyric sheet. If you got your hands on one, enjoy. If you didn't, I'm sorry.

I thought that things would be slowing down around here, but everything just keeps getting crazier and crazier. The Krallice 2LPs have been flying out the door, which is great to see. Thanks to all who have ordered! If you run a label and are interested in any trades, get in touch!

I suddenly have a ton of screen printing stuff to do for various Gilead releases, and I'm working on some stuff for the Thou/Moloch split that Perpetual Motion Machine and Feast of Tentacles are releasing. Great labels, great split. I'll have a big batch of copies as soon as that's done so keep your eyes out for that.

There's also quite a few Gilead titles that have begun falling out of print, and some other goodies I found lying around the storage area. AB Life screen printed edition LPs are pretty close to gone, so if you wanted one do not wait any longer. You'll probably miss out.

Minsk "The Ritual Fires of Abandonment" Gatefold 2LP (Bustead seam copies) - $10.00
I found a few of these in a box with some other damaged sleeve records. Everything will play fine, it's just the top and bottom seams were blown out during shipping. This record is otherwise long out of print. Black vinyl only!

Thou "The Retaliation of the Immutable Force of Nature" 12" - $9.00
"Retaliation" contains the last two tracks from the "Tyrant" CD that are not on the "Tyrant" LP released by Southern Lord. I found 5 copies in a box that I set aside 4 or 5 months ago for an export distro shipment. The customer never responded or paid so now you get a chance to snag one of these babies up! This record includes a large hand screen-printed single color poster on butcher paper, a screen printed cardstock insert with letter pressing on the reverse side, and the fantastic "Animal Liberation, Human Annihilation" 2-color patch. Everything was hand screen printed by either myself or Chris Sommer from Sacred Tapes, with letterpressing done by Bryan Funck. These are the last 5 copies I have. This may be repressed sometime in the fall after Summit is all settled up. But now before then.

THOU "SUMMIT" CD - IN STORES JULY 13TH

In March of 2008 Gilead Media released the debut full-length, Tyrant, by Baton Rouge, LA doom band Thou. Over the past two and a half years the band has played over 150 shows, including multiple national tours throughout the entire US. They've also managed to release a split, ep, cassette or LP (their catalog now numbering nearly 20 releases) on just about every label worth their weight in a pallet of vinyl... from Southern Lord and Robotic Empire to Halo of Flies, Vendetta and Perpetual Motion Machine, among many, many more. This isn't just about quantity, either. Any fan of the band will sincerely explain how much they love every record the band has made available.

I think this is due in part to this basic fact: Thou are a "punk rock" doom band. They've somehow combined the ethics of true DIY punk, and the sound of sludging, droning doom to breath life into a creative entity that is completely passionate, they're entirely dedicated to what they do. They don't write their music and lyrics to serve any one scene or genre, I don't even like labeling them as doom, as it isn't fitting in and of itself. THOU draws so drastically on so many different influences, influences that find their ways through their songs in a myriad of ways.

These are the things that set this band apart in a world where many try to emulate honest heavy music. Their lyrics are politically and ethically charged, their riffs defy simple genre classification, and SUMMIT showcases the band at their most progressive, melodic and diverse. All the while retaining their signature style of apocalyptically crushing metal. In the time since I enthusiastically exchanged my first emails with them in late 2007 Thou has grown from an up and coming band in heavy music, to a band that is now primed to define the future of what slow and heavy music may become.

The CD will be packaged in a old-style gatefold case and include an 8 page booklet, obi strip and screen printed patch. I'm also hoping to run a package where you can pre-order the CD alongside an exclusive t-shirt.

Hello my dear friends.
I just wanted to send out a quick message with an update for you on these two items. I've been getting a lot of direct email inquiries from customers and I want to address the delays on both.

First I want to thank everyone for their patience thus far on these two records. Chances are you ordered them a long time ago and have been looking forward to their arrival. I apologize for all delays in manufacturing and shipping. Here are the details on where we're at...

MEWITHOUTYOU AB LIFE SCREEN PRINTED EDITION LP
I had to clear a couple things with Tooth and Nail that I had totally forgotten about, which held this up. But the paper for the jackets arrived today, the ink arrived today, the screens are burned and I'm printing these tonight (Monday). As long as all goes well then these will ship tomorrow for you all!

KRALLICE DIMENSIONAL BLEEDTHROUGH 2LP
There was a problem I didn't hear with the first test pressings. The Band identified it and we had to get the records recut. I rushed everything as much as possible, but as most of you know, when dealing with vinyl the word "Rush" isn't really what we want it to be... not that people don't do their jobs, because a lot of folks definitely pulled through to get this recut quickly. But vinyl manufacturing in the USA takes time. But I feel like the final product will benefit from the time and attention paid here. Overall I'm really happy with what's on the way.

That said, records are scheduled to be here May 12th. They'll be assembled and ready to ship immediately, so mail-order will be underway as soon as I get the pallet unloaded into my living room. Shirts are already printed for this, if you selected the package, so that won't cause any delay.

You know, I've been a huge fanboy for everything Dave Rudnik (Bass - Get Rad, other stuff in Seven Days of Samsara, High on Crime, Kungfu Rick, and a ton of other righteous bands) since I started getting into hardcore. In addition, I was always a huge Since by Man fan (Kevin, vocals for Get Rad played guitar for SBM). So naturally when I first heard about Get Rad I was really excited to see what it was all about. I was never let down. Every release reveals more and more how much can be awesome and righteous in hardcore. Get Rad are about as good as it gets.

So, April 2010 we will present what I strongly feel is one of the best hardcore records I've heard in years. Get Rad capture an energy and excitement that I've come to think was lost in hardcore. I am elated to be involved in the process of releasing the record. "I Can Always Live" will be presented in CD and Gatefold LP format (with digital download). Get stoked, stay rad.

MEWITHOUTYOU "[A-->B] LIFE" LP - SCREEN PRINTED EDITION LTD TO 90

The grey pressing of AB Life was a bit of an overrun and resulted in a batch of records arriving without jackets to find a cozy home within. These have just been hanging out for a good couple years or so. Occasionally I would remove a black LP from a jacket and fill it with a grey LP to fill an order and such, but they generally sat untouched. I decided to go ahead and screen print some folding jackets and slim inserts, providing a limited edition version that will essentially only be available here, one time. The band is getting a small batch, about 14, but I'm not sure if they're going to bother selling them or just hold onto them or pass them around to friends and family. So here they are, only 36 on black, 53 on grey, and one on clear orange from the first pressing. These colors will be filled into orders randomly, so please don't request a color because your request will be ignored. All copies will be hand numbered /90.
